Khwai Bush Camp

Khwai Bush Camp has 4 charming standard chalets with stone walls and thatched roofs, designed to keep the environment cool and refreshing. The chalets all sit by the river’s edge, giving guests a stunning view of the floodplains. Each of the rooms is provided with fans, mosquito nets and repellent for your comfort. The standard chalets are also fitted with a fireplace to keep guests warm in the chilly mornings and evenings during Botswana’s winter.

There are battery-charging facilities in each guest room, crucial for keeping cameras topped up, as well as a spacious en-suite bathroom that includes a luxurious indoor shower and double basins. The chalets lead out onto a private verandah, where guests can enjoy the amazing African landscape in privacy.

The 2 Family Chalets consist of 2 bedrooms, one with a huge double bed, and the other furnished with two twins. Khwai Bush Camp is family-friendly and welcomes children of all ages. Like the other rooms, the Family Chalets have stone walls and thatched roofs that are designed to keep the climate comfortable. The Family Chalets are positioned at the right-most side from the water’s edge and provide beautiful views of the Khwai River

Enjoy a chilled beverage at the pool-side bar, under the stars with the sounds of lapping water and nocturnal wildlife. Most dietary requirements can be catered for as long as the camp is notified in advance.

Embark on an exciting game drive and see the Moremi Game Reserve’s amazing wildlife up close. Drive up to prowling lions and giant elephants and watch them behave in their natural habitat from the safety of the safari vehicle. The camp’s experienced guides will teach you about the extraordinary creatures that live on the Okavango Delta, as well as showing you hidden spots that are perfect for viewing game.

Night drives are also available and offer the unique chance to find some of the reserve’s nocturnal creatures. The darkness adds an extra immersive element to this experience as you watch adorable bushbabies and civets go about their nightly routines. You may also see predators at their most active, such as leopards who return to the high trees to feast on the prey which they have hidden earlier in the day from fellow predators.

Step out into the bush with your own two feet on a guided walking tour. Venture to the places that safari vehicles cannot reach, and spy on incredible wildlife without the noise of an engine to startle them. This experience is enhanced during the dry season when more land is available for walking on. The professional armed guides will be able to teach you about the fascinating species that live in Moremi Game Reserve, as well as how to recognise animal tracks and marks left in the bush.

Drift along the stunning Okavango waterways in a dug-out canoe and watch the wildlife from the safety of the Khwai River. Once the only form of transportation available to bushmen, mokoros would have been fashioned from hardwood tree trunks. Today, they are made from fibreglass to help preserve Botswana’s stunning hardwood forests. Learn about the river and its inhabitants while hippos swim alongside you and elephants drink from the riverbanks. This is a seasonal activity, due to the fluctuating levels of the water, and is best enjoyed during the green season (November to April). For safety reasons, guests must be 16 years or older to travel in a mokoro.

With over 300 species of birds to see, the Khwai River is an ideal place to observe the rich birdlife of Botswana. Search for the endangered wattled crane, or listen to the songs of the Arnot’s Chat and Hartlub’s Babbler. Different birds may be available to spot depending on the season. For example, the green season brings in large numbers of the stunning carmine bee-eaters as they migrate for the season.

The Ngwana Club is an ideal way for children to learn about African culture. Children can enjoy storytelling, cooking lessons and cultural arts and crafts at the camp. Children can also go on nature walks and discover fun facts about the Okavango Delta and its astonishing wildlife.

On visits to the local Khwai village, guests can meet the people who know Botswana best and discover their way of life. By working together with local communities, Khwai Bush Camp has been able to give local people the chance to be self-sustainable. The camp has also been working with local communities to spread appreciation for the wildlife by providing resolutions to human and wildlife conflict.

Khwai Bush Camp is partnered with the Pack for a Purpose initiative, which encourages travellers to benefit local communities by utilising spare suitcase space to bring much-needed supplies for their Conservation Education Program and Women’s Craft Groups. Supplies can be dropped off at your accommodation and will be used to aid a local project, such as craft groups, where local woman are taught skills that allow them to make traditional and non-traditional items such as traditional basketwork, hand-sewn and embroidered products and hand-beaded glass and food nets. These items can then be sold to provide incomes, start small businesses and even support the construction of homes.

The African Bush Camps Foundation has established a number of projects that aim to improve education, empowerment and conservation efforts within the local communities where they operate. They work with members of the community in order to improve school facilities, provide educational textbooks and supplies for students, and supporting a local health centre, as well as encouraging these communities to form a peaceful relationship with the local wildlife, and finding ways to resolve human and animal conflict.

The biggest threat to African lions is conflict with humans. Livestock is vital for many people’s livelihoods, and if lions attempt to attack livestock, it can have devastating effects for both the owners and the lions themselves – as people may retaliate. Because of this, the Lion Guardian teams are trained to empower and educate local communities about living in harmony with wildlife. By providing employment, the African Bush Camps Foundation is able to support the local guardians as well as protect lions and livestock.

The Khwai Bush Camp uses solar power to reduce carbon emissions and to keep its impact on the environment minimal. The camp also uses fibreglass in order to create mokoros for the water safaris rather than the traditional hardwood trunks, in order to protect the hardwood forests. The African Bush Foundation runs a ‘Greener Camps’ programme which means that ‘African Bush Camps Safari Properties are committed to operating in a sustainable manner, ensuring that we preserve the environment, culture and conservation of Africa. Where possible we use solar power, low energy lighting systems, wastewater treatment, greywater recycling, and single-use plastic reduction initiatives.’
