Amanzi Camp

Located on the riverbanks of the Zambezi River, in the diverse wilderness of the Lower Zambezi National Park lies Amanzi Camp. This camp is exclusive and private, nestled in amongst trees, allowing guests an authentic, private, and unique stay in the heart of nature. With only 4 traditional safari tents, guests can enjoy the peace and quiet with only bird song and sounds of flowing water filling the air. A unique verandah at the end of the tents offers the perfect space to unwind and relax in hanging chairs, gazing out over the vast Zambezi. A comfortable main area is where dinner is served, and guests can grab a drink from the bar and watch as the sun sets, gazing through the open sides, over the stunning vista. Connection and immersion within nature is a key theme of the activities on offer, from game drives and walking safaris to canoeing along the gentle waters of the river; each activity will place you in the centre of nature.

The Lower Zambezi National Park is 4092 kilometres² of untouched wilderness. Founded in 1983, the whole park is a haven for wildlife, with a diverse range of bird and animal species inhabiting the park. The Zambezi River makes up one border of the park, and the glistening waters of the river lead to luscious riverbanks, rolling grasslands and areas of thick forest. The highest density of wildlife will be found by the Zambezi River, with herds of elephants bathing, lounging hippos, zebras catching a drink, and the occasional sly lion.

The diversity of species extends to birdlife as well, with over 400 species of bird recorded in the park from Pel’s fishing owl, trumpeter hornbill, crested guinea fowl and African skimmers, to name just a few. The land of the national park contains such biodiversity that many areas of the park have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Guests can access Amanzi by flying in to Lusaka or Livingstone Airports, from where a private charter flight and vehicle transfer to Amanzi can be arranged.

Lower Zambezi National Park goes through two distinct seasons; a wet season from December to March, and a dry season from April to November. During the wet season Amanzi is closed, as rainfall is heavy and disrupting. However for the rest of the year Amanzi is open and thriving. When the rains finish at the beginning of April the park is luscious and alive with new life and colour, whilst there may be a few light rain showers mostly the temperature is mild and skies are blue and clear.

From June to August the temperatures warm up and reach between the mid 20°Cs to the low 30°Cs every day. During this time of year the mornings and evenings can be chilly, so warm clothing is advised. By September and October the temperatures have really warmed up, hitting heights of 35°C. During this time wildlife viewing is exceptional, especially along the banks of the Zambezi River, as animals flock to the water’s edge to grab a drink and keep cool. November can see a mixture of hot temperatures as well as random downpours of rain, foreshadowing the start of the rainy season.

Safari Tents

With only four traditional safari tents at Amanzi Camp guests can enjoy being in the heart of nature in peace and privacy. The tents are spacious and bright, with modern furniture and comfortable seating areas. One corner of the tent is completely open sided and acts as a verandah, with swinging chairs perfectly placed to look out over the Ngwenga channel and comfortable wicker armchairs round a unique coffee table.

A king size bed sits in the centre of the tent, draped with mosquito netting, and looking out through wide windows to the channel beyond. These windows flood the room with natural light, and the open verandah acts to keep the space filled with fresh breezes. At the far end of the tent a bamboo half wall divides the sleeping and living area from the ensuite bathroom. Two standard tents can be connected and turned into a family unit, perfect for a small family.

Main Area

In the main area of the camp guests will find a bar and dining area. Open sided, to allow for uninterrupted views of the stunning surroundings, this area is comfortable, with wicker armchairs and sofas to relax on in the evening, and director style bar chairs. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here, and all meals are fresh and delicious. Guests can enjoy a refreshing drink from the bar before dinner and unwind as they watch the sunset over the river.

Game Drives

For a traditional safari experience guests can enjoy a game drive. Journey through the park in the comfort of a 4×4 game vehicle for the chance to see elephant, buffalo, lion or zebra, undisturbed and in their natural habitat. Guests can also head out for an evening and night game drive for a chance to see some of the more elusive nocturnal species, such as leopard.

Walking Safaris

For a more intimate way to explore the national park guests can enjoy a walking safari. There is no better way to feel close to nature than exploring on foot, and an experienced and friendly guide will be able to impart their wisdom on the way. Guests can keep an eye out for the smaller things they might miss on a game drive, such as micro-ecosystems and animal tracks.

Canoeing

Relax and glide serenely along the gentle Zambezi River. With an experienced guide leading the way, this is the perfect opportunity to keep your eyes fixed on the riverbanks, and the diverse birdlife, as well as bathing elephants and lazy pods of hippos who frequent the area.

Birding and Fishing

With over 350 species of bird in the Lower Zambezi National Park this area is an excellent location for the keen birder. Spend some time looking to the trees and the riverbanks, and see if you can spot a blacksmith lapwing, spur-winged goose, or African jacana. Guests can also spend the afternoon fishing; with provided equipment cast your fishing line into the river and see if you can catch a mighty Tiger fish.

Conservation of Wildlife

The design of Amanzi Camp shows a consciousness towards environmental issues. The raised walkways and paths preserve the natural landscape and don’t disturb the natural paths of any wandering animals who may venture around the camp. It also reduces their ecological footprint on the land, and helps to preserve the ecosystems around the camp.

Solar Power

To help reduce their carbon footprint and utilise the renewable power of the sun, solar panels are used to generate the majority of Amazi’s power, thus reducing their reliance on fossil fuels.

Children over the age of 12 are welcomed at Amanzi Camp. Children over the age of 8 are welcomed if part of a private group booking.
