Much of the island of Dominica is uninhabited. As such, large portions of land have been allocated to National Parks. A visit to the Morne Trois Pitons National Park (designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997) is a must. The Park boasts five volcanoes, freshwater lakes, hot springs and waterfalls, including the famous Trafalgar Falls. Close to Secret Bay is the fabulous Morne Diablotin National Park, as well as the well-maintained Fort Shirley in Cabrits National Park, beautifully situated on a peninsula, overlooking Portsmouth and Secret Bay in the distance.
As seen on a map of the island, Dominica is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean at one side, and the Caribbean Sea on the other. At Scotts Head, you have the chance to stand between ocean and sea on a narrow strip of land that separates these two different bodies of water. On one side, you’re greeted by crashing waves, and on the other, serine turquoise waters. Climb to the top of the peninsula for outstanding views of the southern tip of the island and villages that make for awesome photographic moments.
At Bubble Beach you will find shallow pools where seawater is warmed by hot mineral water which naturally springs up and trickles in from the shoreline. Here, you can get up-close-and-personal with Dominica’s two endemic parrot species in the captivity breeding area, designed to support the preservation of endangered indigenous birds. Be sure to pass by the landmark left by Hurricane David in 1979 where a massive baobab tree crushed a bus – an astonishing sight to behold.
Meandering through the garden, you will find the beginning of Jack’s Walk, an upwards forest trail delicately shaded by the surrounding trees. This 20-minute hike up into the area of Morne Bruce affords panoramic views of Roseau and the surrounding coastline. Jacks Walk is also an excellent preparation exercise for some of Dominica’s more challenging hikes.
Visiting Jaco Falls will immerse you in the essence of the jungle. This pristine waterfall is among the first you will get to see and will certainly leave an impression. A set of steps bring you right down to the pool of the waterfall and the crisp waters invite you to take a plunge and rejuvenate all of your senses.
Roseau, Dominica’s quaint and soulful capital feels lost in time. Visit on Saturday morning when the streets are packed with merchants and customers. The bustling passages are lined with exotic fruits, vegetables, flowers and spices. Soak up the atmosphere of this warm and friendly environment, with a unique and authentic market feel you won’t find anywhere else.
The picturesque twin waterfalls at Trafalgar are one of Dominica’s most popular attractions. The 125ft and 75ft falls can be viewed after a 15-minute walk up a relaxing trail through the rainforest. On the viewing platform, you can take photos and enjoy the views before deciding whether to walk a little further to soak in mineral rich hot pools, sculpted by nature. Feeling adventurous? Once guided to the waterfall, you can climb over impressive rock formations to get as close as possible to the larger cascade.
Not to be confused with that of Zimbabwe, you will find Dominica’s Victoria Falls in the village of Delices. The trail starts at the White River and has several river crossings making for an exhilarating and moderately challenging adventure. This picturesque hike will be one to remember, especially when taking a dip in the clear turquoise waters beneath the fall.
Titou Gorge, also meaning “Little Throat” is the result of volcanic activity, where lava which cooled had split open, leaving only this natural cave. Swim inside and you will find a gushing waterfall, sparkling with light filtered from the forest canopy above.
You will find Freshwater Lake over 2500ft above sea level in a volcanic crater, which is part of Dominica’s greater World Heritage Site. The lake and surrounding area can be mysteriously shrouded in mist or gleaming in the sunlight, often changing between these climates within a matter of minutes. Kayaking on the lake is a serene and fun way to enjoy this pristine environment. To stretch your legs, you can hike the 2.5-mile trail around the perimeter for even more fantastic views.

This initiative is designed to re-establish a bounty of healthy coral along the Caribbean Sea, encouraging the reproduction of asexual and sexual coral. The exercise takes place in a coral nursery off the shore of Ti-Bay Beach at Secret Bay. Successfully bred corals are implanted onto natural reefs where they continue to grow and revitalise marine activity.
The introduction of raised beds along the perimeter of each villa allows guests access to organic vegetable produce within two minutes of their veranda. Likewise, much of the space around the property is utilised in creatively similar ways.
Secret Bay has incorporated the daily systematic tracking of electricity usage per location with each property and facility. This cutting-edge system allows for the monitorisation and analysis of electricity usage, facilitating more efficient energy practices and allowing for continual improvements. The use of state-of-the-art energy efficient appliances and the Preventative Maintenance Scheme ensures the close monitoring of appliances to ensure effective functionality. Energy efficient appliances produce a lighter carbon footprint than conventional appliances, which is crucially important in the undisturbed, natural landscapes of Dominica. For instance, the installation of LED lights in all guest and staff occupied areas along with Occupancy Sensors ensures that energy is not lost through lights being left on.
Linen is refreshed every three days to reduce water consumption. This initiative prevents the consumption of vast quantities of water used in laundry, which over the course of years proves to be a sustainably viable option.
Secret Bay supports the local island economy by making use of local products and services. This includes continued reinvestment into the community through paid labour and facilitation of new skills. Providing career prospects for local people is necessary in supporting the islands economy.
Unoccupied/unused areas within the property including villas, staff quarters, restaurant and the administrative building can be cut of electricity. The switch-off system that makes this possible is a remarkable asset that aids tremendously in the preservation of energy.
Secret Bay conducts regular one on one training sessions to keep staff informed of the best practices regarding water, electricity and other resources. Policies are introduced per department to motivate staff to practice conservation, as well as to maintain implemented safety guidelines.

Secret Bay’s elaborate array of villas are constructed entirely from sustainably sourced Guyanese hardwood. Additionally, no heavy machinery was involved during the construction process, with each unit being meticulously assembled by hand. Dominica is committed to utilising renewable energy and has relied on the use of hydroelectricity as a primary source of energy since as early as 1960. Likewise, the island has recently confirmed the potential for geothermal energy production. Secret Bay embraces the use of renewable energy generated on the island, with all parties committed to policies and practices aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting carbon offset programmes implemented wherever possible.
The production of waste within the property is closely monitored to reduce the quantity of garbage delivered to the island’s landfill, with all parties committed to maintenance policies that aim to recycle, reduce and reuse items wherever possible. This entails providing designated bins such as compost bins for waste separation at each residence. All waste transfers are coordinated to the appropriate, designated sites.
All parties commit to zero tolerance for Styrofoam and single-use plastics, including plastic bags and bottles. Water filtration systems are provided to eliminate the need for plastic water bottles. Regular maintenance is carried out on the water filtration systems to ensure water quality is at its best.
Secret Bay is an environmentally conscious entity dedicated to reducing pollution through its cutting-edge Sustainability Management System. In addition to waste management, the use of electronic documentation where possible, electronic transportation, environmentally sensitive motorised boats and shared employee transfers to and from work aid in the maintaining of a pollution-free zone.

Secret Bay is dedicated to protecting the many ecological systems that encompass the island, from the trees and wildlife to flora and fauna, extensive measures have been undertaken to avoid disrupting their immediate surroundings. For instance, in efforts to avoid soil erosion on the immediate land, native Vetiver plants are nurtured in abundance. Planting is specially coordinated to appropriate quality and maximum growth. Where applicable, food waste is used as a meaningful source of food for the fish, crayfish, crabs and algae that reside within the Cairo River. As such, the residents of secret bay are dedicated to protecting, supporting and enhancing wildlife and ecosystems across the property.

Children under 18 years are welcome in all villas at Secret Bay with a signed liability waiver from an accompanying parent or guardian, subject to the maximum occupancy of 3 persons in the Zabuco villas, 2 persons in the Ylang Ylang villas, and 4 persons in the Ti-Fèy villa.
