Camp Savuti

Camp Savuti is situated in the third largest National Park in Botswana, and one that is home to the largest elephant concentration found anywhere in Africa. 5 large Meru-style elevated tents ensure intimacy, privacy and outstanding views over the Savuti Marsh, perfect for spotting game and enjoying the spectacular sunsets from the comfort of your own decking. Guests can cool off after game drives with a refreshing outdoor shower immersing yourself in the tranquility of the Chobe National Park. A comfortable lounge area offers guests a space to relax and unwind with a gentle peruse of the books and a quiet read, with stunning views just over the top of the page.

Chobe National Park is renowned for its outstanding game viewing all year round, and visitors are almost guaranteed sightings of elephants, as the area supports the largest concentration of elephant found anywhere in Africa. The Chobe National Park is currently the third largest in Botswana and was Botswana’s first national park, acquiring that status in 1968.

The wildlife is extremely dynamic in the Savuti Marsh area of Chobe National Park, the Savuti Channel bisects the park and empties into the Savuti Marsh, creating a region covered in rolling grasslands and immense savannahs. The diverse landscape is dotted by towering trees and thicker, primeval woodland. Watering holes punctuate the land and are surrounded by luscious vegetation, creating the perfect area for hungry and thirsty animals.

Guests can access the camp by flying from Maun International or Savuti International Airports to the Savuti airstrip and then an approximately 20 minute vehicle transfer to the camp.

April to October is the dry season in the Savuti region. Temperatures are cooler in this season, and warm jackets for the evenings are advised. Skies are clear, making this season the best for game drives as the visibility is excellent and herds of game concentrate along the waterways looking for a refreshing drink.

The wet season is November to March, with sporadic rainfall and spectacular thunderstorms which set the stage for some breathtakingly beautiful sunsets. These months are warmer and humid, cool cotton clothing is advised. Due to the rain, the area becomes luscious as vegetation starts to grow.

5 Meru Tents

Camp Savuti has 5 Meru tented rooms. Elevated from the ground, these come in either a twin or double configuration and all have ensuite bathrooms. Comfortable beds sit in the middle of the room, decorated in a natural colour palette to blend in with the surroundings. Wide netted windows fill the space with natural light whilst keeping the bugs out and wooden framed doors at the front of the tent can be opened to let the gentle African breeze float round the room.

The ensuites come complete with an indoor and an outdoor shower so guests can enjoy a cooling shower from the heat of the day. Each tent comes complete with a private veranda area where guests can relax and marvel over the magnificent vista.

Dining Area

Guests can enjoy dinner in the thatched dining area, on comfortable director style chairs and lit by soft lighting. When the weather is warm and dry enough, dinner can be served outside allowing guests to immerse themselves in the sights, smells and sounds of the Savuti while enjoying freshly prepared, delicious food. Before or after drinks can be served around the Boma, a traditional way to enjoy the evening.

Game Drives

In an area so densely populated by game, it makes sense that the main excursions are game drives. Morning or afternoon drives are available, and are one of the best ways to explore the surroundings. Follow animal tracks, and place yourself in the centre of nature for and unforgettable safari experience. Elephants, impala, giraffe, zebra, antelope, buffalo and spotted brown hyena are all possible sightings, and what better way to see them than in their natural environment.

Look up to the skies

With over 250 species of bird in this area of the Chobe National Park it is a birdwatchers paradise, especially in the wet season. See if you can spot the Cattle Egret, Woodland Kingfishers or the beautiful Lilac-breasted Roller. Wide night skies unpolluted by natural light makes for magnificent star gazing. Feel delightfully disconnected and look to the skies to see if you can spot constellations that aren’t visible anywhere else.

Community Projects

Projects to sponsor two local primary schools were launched in 2011. Providing food and stationary have helped the teachers and the students gain more from their education and Camp Savuti “continues to improve the conditions every year” helping to create opportunities and bright futures for the pupils. Camp Savuti have also built bridges helping to support better infrastructure and keep the local communities connected during times of flooding and high water.

Children are welcomed at Camp Savuti although a private game vehicle must be booked if there are children under 11 years of age
