Upon your arrival at Xigera Safari Lodge, you can expect lavish, all-inclusive catering and fine dining throughout the duration of your stay. In the evening, a plated three course dinner is served at an atmospheric, in-camp communal dining area, in the company of friends and guide alike. Guided game drives provide the opportunity to traverse expansive delta lands in open 4×4 safari vehicles. Thriving game populations within the NG28 Concession make for ample wildlife viewing potential as you travel across open landscapes and merging eco systems.

Lion, leopard, lechwe and tsessebe are among some of the major attractions that entice guests year-round, as well as the larger safari staples such as elephant, hippopotamus and buffalo, as do herds of giraffe, frolicking zebra, kudu and wild dog. Night drives are not permitted within the boundaries of the Moremi Game Reserve.

Guided game walks allow you to take in the sights and sounds of the Okavango at a more intimate and leisurely pace than is applicable with other modes of safari game viewing. Knowledgeable guides, familiar with the many indigenous birds and their beckoning calls will familiarise you by pointing out different species as you progress. Some of the rarer avian species include the illusive Pel’s fishing owl, endangered wattled crane and the majestic African fish eagle.

This operation serves to transcend conventional monetary support in place of optional guest experiences that impart a positive impact on the people and communities they visit. The established criteria outlined by MTM serves to highlight and support specific socio-economic/ecological and humanitarian issues outlined by the United Nations Global Goals criteria, of which, MTM addresses 11 of the 17 goals outlined.

The Global Goals were developed by the United Nations in 2015 to create a better future for all peoples of developing countries by 2030. They are quickly becoming the language of sustainability for governments and businesses worldwide.

In order to tackle poverty on a global scale, two of the following criteria must be met. Fair and affordable access to goods and services must be afforded to those living in poverty. Marginalised persons must be directly employed to increase economic activity in areas of high poverty and through supporting community owned enterprises.

Securing children a high quality education can be achieved by providing aid to people accessing education through scholarships, providing on-site childcare, mentorship and training opportunities, promoting reading and education through local schools and supporting youth to learn about the cultural heritage of their religion.

A future that holds brighter prospects for women of the developing world can be achieved by incorporating 51% female corporate ownership of businesses, actively empower women and girls through community investment (micro-lending, life-skills, etc.), provide secure employment for vulnerable women, supply on-site childcare and flexible working hours for caregivers, provide personal hygiene kits for women and girls (free of cost) and facilitate access to sexual and reproductive health services.

This experience is helping to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation. To meet this goal, improved access to safe and affordable drinking water, sanitation facilities and hygiene must be provided, and water use efficiency and freshwater usage must be refined (E.g. low-flow fixtures, rain-capture, drought-resistant landscaping or behavioural best practices).

This experience contributes to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. The first and at least one other of the following measures must be undertaken: the organisation must be powered by renewable energy (does not include people powered activities e.g., walking), the experience contributes to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, and the experience must showcase how prioritising a shift to renewable energy leads to sustainable and resilient communities.

This initiative seeks to combat inequalities for minorities or underrepresented people. E.g., LGBTQ, Indigenous, refugees, low-income, seniors etc. To achieve this, organisations must actively recruit and employ people from underrepresented populations and provide services to support or empower marginalised people that would conventionally not receive access.

This goal serves to educate guests on the sustainability and resiliency of community, and contributes to making the destination inclusive, resilient and sustainable for generations to come. To achieve this, an educational component for guests to learn about how the organisation contributes to the sustainability & resiliency of their community will be instated, as well as by providing safe and affordable housing with opportunities for indigenous people – incorporate Indigenous culture/education into the experience.

This experience promotes sustainable food experiences, small scale farmer interactions and responsible consumption. An educational component must be provided for guests to learn about the importance of sustainable/responsible consumption, strategies must be implemented to reduce food waste and promote sustainable agricultural practices (E.g. Permaculture, biodynamic farming etc.) Circular economy principles must be showcased in relation to upcycling (using waste as a resource).

A proportionate volume of goods must be sourced locally (within 50 miles/ 80km), low-carbon proteins/plant-rich diets and vegan meal options should be prioritised. Sustainability reports must also be published. The majority of products such as cocoa, coffee, tea, or other products must be sourced with sustainability practices in mind – certified to internationally accepted standards like those incorporated by Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance.

This experience serves to educates guests on the climate crisis and prompts action to address its impacts. To achieve this, guests must be educated about the climate crisis and what actions can be taken to minimise impact. At least 50% of energy must come from renewable sources – further making progress towards carbon neutrality. Emission reduction targets must be instated with plans outlined to achieve them, in addition to measuring and publishing their carbon footprint.

This experience contributes to the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine ecosystems. Actions must be taken to actively prevent/reduce marine pollution. The distribution and facilitation of any single use plastic items during the experience must be completely avoided – including the use of plastics within their operations.

Guests must be educated on the marine environment and the best practices for a low-impact experience. Endangered marine species must be protected, as well as taking action to remove invasive species. Actions must also be taken to support scientists working on conservation and directly protect, sustainably manage, or rehabilitate marine and costal ecosystems.

This experience seeks to educate guests on the importance of natural ecosystems and wildlife conservation – contributing to their restoration or repopulation. Education on improving, protecting or conserving ecosystems or animal populations must be provided for all guests and support should be granted for reforestation/tree-planting initiatives.

Sustainable, agricultural practices are to be promoted, as well as facilitating engagement in habitat restoration and anti-poaching initiatives while supporting the conservation of threatened or at-risk species.

Xigera Safari Lodge incorporates the use of solar power electricity in the functions of the property – i.e. providing electricity for lighting and water heating.

Solar power initiatives are rapidly becoming the new standard for all ecotourism destinations situated within Southern Africa and beyond, as an increasing number of operators are investing in new, cutting edge renewable energy sources and deviating from ecologically detrimental alternatives such as conventional diesel-powered generators.

With the abundance of sun inherent to Northern Botswana, the installation of solar farms like those implemented at Xigera Safari Lodge proves to be financially viable and ecologically sustainable.

Xigera Safari Lodge is constructed from primarily recyclable and locally sourced materials. In order to mediate the inherent footprint on the immediate environment, all in-camp facilities and accommodation are built on timber decks, thereby placing less stress on the ground, with no permanent structures to speak of.

This practice ensures that any construction pieces can be easily and efficiently disassembled, allowing for the swift recovery of the land on which these installations are built – usually returning to its original state within 1 ½ years.

The application of locally sourced and recyclable materials greatly offsets the environmental impact of constructing a property in what can only be considered an environmentally sensitive area, with diminished need to have industrial quantities of lumber and construction materials hauled long distances through otherwise undisturbed ecosystems in order to commence construction.
