Manatus Hotel

The Manatus Hotel is a luxury lodge surrounded by the stunning waterways and flora of Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. The Hotel provides a perfect base camp for exploring the magnificent beauty of the Tortuguero National Park which is only a 5 minute boat ride away. The property is breathtaking, surrounded by two hectares of tropical rainforest, whilst the 12 individually appointed lodge-rooms with private patios offer guests an intimate sanctuary to retreat to after a long day of exploring the beauty Tortuguero has to offer. Manatus Hotel offers a variety of tours over the property and the surrounding national park on foot and by boat.

The Manatus Hotel is only accessible by boat or by air, and guests flying to San Jose International Airport will need to take a road transfer to either Moine or La Pavona, where Colectivo boats make the journey several times a day. Alternatively, domestic airlines offer short flights from San Jose to Tortuguero. Manatus Hotel offers road and boat transfers for an extra charge.

The Manatus Hotel is idyllically situated on the border of Tortuguero National Park; over 19,000 hectares of unique nature reserve which is home to an immensely diverse ecosystem that boasts over 11 distinct habitats from tropical rainforest to herbaceous marshlands. The National Park is threaded by an infinite maze of serpentine canals and streams fed by rivers flowing from the central mountain range which can be experienced on guided boat tours.

The town of Tortuguero, sometimes called the turtle capital of Costa Rica, is on the country’s Caribbean coast, and its beach is the nesting place of several types of turtle and is one of the most important nesting sites of the endangered green turtle in the Western Hemisphere. The Tortuguero canal flows parallel to the Manatus Hotel, which places guests directly amongst the vibrant plant life and exotic wildlife that inhabit the area and offers views of the waterways and passing boats.

Tortuguero has a tropical rain forest climate, and as such the typical weather is warm and humid year-round. This climate is responsible for the lush green rain forest which is home to an incredible biodiversity of both flora and fauna. The average temperature varies between 22 and 32 degrees Celsius. The warmest month is April, with a highest average maximum temperature of 32°C, and the coldest months are November and December, but these are still a balmy average of 22°C.

Bungalow-Style Rooms

The Manatus Hotel has twelve individually appointed bungalow-style rooms which each have their own private patio, offering guests an intimate sanctuary in which to unwind after a long day of exploring the beauty of Tortuguero. The rooms are spacious and airy, with two double beds to accommodate up to four guests. The beds are dressed in plush white linens, and splashes of colour are brought to the rooms through the hand-painted sinks and lamps, which feature wildlife native to Tortuguero such as toucans and manatees. Each of the rooms has an ensuite and a private outdoor shower under the stunning canopy of the rainforest.

Ara Macaw

Ara Macaw offers an exquisite gourmet fusion of afro-Caribbean and Costa Rican cuisine, with a la carte menus available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The carefully designed menu is varied and cosmopolitan offering guests a full culinary experience to be enjoyed in the open-air restaurant that is nestled in the lush verdant gardens which are home to a stunning array of birds and fauna. The canal views add to the tranquility of the experience.

Bar Morpho specialises in beach-style cocktails for guests to unwind with and enjoy the spectacular sunsets over the canal and gardens.

Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero National Park protects over 19,000 hectares and includes a vast diversity of natural habitats: beach, estuary, marine, freshwater riverine and tropical lowland rain forest. The National Park is home to an extensive network of freshwater creeks and lagoons which are the natural habitat of seven species of river turtles, Spectacled Caimans, Southern River Otters, several types of crustaceans and over fifty species of freshwater fish. Several types of guided boat tours are available, and allow visitors an up-close and personal experience of the wildlife.

Sport Fishing

Barra del Colorado is the largest reserve in the country and offers visitors some fantastic fishing opportunities throughout the year with both freshwater and marina fishing locations. From January to June, tarpon are in season, whilst from September to December there is a large number of bass. Please note that the reserve has a catch-and-release policy to ensure the safety of its marine population.

Waste Management Program

A comprehensive waste management program focusing on “reduce, reuse and recycle” that helps conserve energy and reduces pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions. Manatus Tortuguero also participate in a local recycling program where they recycle paper, cardboard, beverage containers, plastics and aluminium in general.

LED luminaires light bulbs

LED luminaires light bulbs are used within the hotel premises, these bulbs last longer and emit less heat than incandescent bulbs and compact fluorescent lamps.

Boat Engines

To reduce emissions and minimise any potential water pollution, Manatus Hotel has replaced the 4-stoke engines on their boats with 2-stoke engines.

Water Conservation Program

The Manatus Hotel has established a water conservation program within the property that encourages both guests and employees to be mindful of water usage and educates about the excessive consumption of water. Water-saving hardware is currently installed in the communal areas of the hotel and there are plans to extend this to the rest of the property.

Conservation Forest

The grounds of Manatus Hotel are home to two hectares of tropical rainforest as part of a conservation project and is maintained by the hotel as part of their efforts to manage and counteract their C02 emissions.
